Heinz Eifel “Shine” Dornfelder

The Heinz Eifel Shine wines are made from grapes harvested on the sloping hillsides of Germany’s prime wine-growing regions. The winding rivers running alongside these vineyards reflect sunshine, which help ripen the grapes throughout the long, cool growing season.

APPELLATION: Rheinhessen, Germany

100% Dornfelder

Dornfelder was a result of a series of crossings by August Herold at the grape breeding institute in Weinsberg in 1955 and was released for cultivation in 1979. Since then, Dornfelder has grown to be the second most widely planted red grape in Germany due to the fact that it is easier to grow than Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir); has better resistance to rot than Blauer Portugieser; has stronger stalks than Torollinger; ripens earlier than Lemberger and achieves higher must weights and produces a wine with deeper color, more powerful flavors and richer tannins than any of the above varieties. In short, it is a perfect red wine grape for the cool, sometimes damp northerly climate of Germany.

ALCOHOL: 9.5%

TASTING NOTES: The reflection of the sun’s rays off the Rhein river help to ripen these hearty red grapes, thus producing a full bodied wine with flavors of dark red fruits with a well balanced sweetness.
